I started my musical studies at 4 years old at the Porto Orff Institute and then moved on to Porto’s Conservatoire in the Percussion class. During this time I played in numerous concerts ranging from Classical and Symphonic Orchestras to Jazz Orchestras/Combos and Chamber groups.
Having had lessons with some of Porto’s most prolific musicians, I went on to do my Bachelor’s degree in London at the British and Irish Modern Music Institute (BIMM).
I’ve played in projects of wide-ranging genres, from Jazz (and sub-genres like free jazz) to Electronic and even Indie Rock.
Next year I will continue my studies with a Master’s in teaching.
I’ve been teaching for 8 years now and whilst studying in London I had students from all age groups.
I’ve taught Percussion, Drum Kit (all styles), Piano for beginner and intermediate students and Music Theory (including harmony, ear training and other topics the student might want to be covered).
I always do my best to adapt to each student’s needs and goals, as one of my ex- students, Charlie Hart, states in his reference:
“I had the pleasure of being taught by João for over a year – as I was beginner, he emphasised the importance of developing a solid technique without our lessons ever becoming overly formal.
João was highly receptive to the direction in which I wanted the lessons to go (for instance, in the musical styles on which we focused) which meant that motivation was never an issue – I always felt as though João was structuring the lessons and their content to me as an individual student.
Finally, and most importantly, João made sure that drumming was always something that I saw first and foremost as fun and enjoyable (as it should be!) which has kept me drumming – maturing my technique, expanding the range of styles that I try, and now playing in a group of friends – to the present day.”
My prices are £35 per hour, £30 for 45 minutes and £25 for half an hour.
